More details on our sustainability programs can be found in our sustainability report posted on our website.
We view sustainability as a dynamic process in which we constantly examine where we are. We recently conducted a life-cycle analysis (LCA) of our products. As a result of the LCA, we identified the following items for improvement:
- Increasing the level of recycled content low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in our products
- Increasing the content of recycled material in our shipping cartons
- Improving the chemistry of our products by identifying better performing materials
To be frank many companies sustainability programs are limited to printing pictures of trees on their packaging and using slogans such as “Save the World”. At Micro-Pak we have spent considerable time and money on studying our environmental impact and then taking action to reduce our footprint. Our third party studies and certifications are a testament to our efforts. We will not solve everything at once, but we are making meaningful, consistent progress.
Our sustainability efforts clearly have upfront costs but these are recouped through eventual lower energy costs and more efficient manufacturing. Our customers benefit through being ensured of effective, compliant products produced and delivered with a lower environmental impact.
Micro-Pak has conducted a carbon footprint of emissions from our manufacturing facilities, office operations, and business air travel. The biggest source of emissions is attributed to our manufacturing facilities, and we are therefore focusing reduction efforts there through the installation of solar power.
The use of Micro-Pak products can help in each of the following areas:
- Packaging and waste reduction – Micro-Pak products are significantly lighter weight than our competitors’ products, reducing overall packaging and waste volume.
- Lower emissions from transportation – Due to the significantly lower weight of our products, we help customer reduce both their carbon emissions and fuel used in transportation.
- Chemistry/RSL compliance – Micro-Pak products comply with the restricted substance regulations and policies of regulators, brands and industry groups.
Beyond complying with RSL requirements, Micro-Pak’s products have achieved Cradle to Cradle Silver certification. We have also participated in GreenBlue’s Material iQ assessment, utilized the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s HIGG Index, conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our products, and did a carbon footprint of our operations. We have set goals and are working on improvements based on the results of the assessments and footprints.
Micro-Pak products comply with the restricted substance policies of major retailers and brands around the globe. Please feel free to send us your RSLs and we will be glad to check these to ensure we are in complete compliance
In the US Micro-Pak products are registered with the Environmental Protection as well as with all fifty states. In the EU Micro-Pak products are pre-registered under REACH and comply with the most recent list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). Micro-Pak® stickers and sheets are in compliance with the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) for treated articles and are in process for full EU product authorization.
Rigorous third-party analysis has been conducted of the environmental and human health impacts of every chemical that goes into our products. The results of the analysis validate the environmental performance and product safety of our products. You can see the results of the third-party analysis at www.c2ccertified.org and http://www.greenblue.org/work/miq/
At the present time our key areas of focus include:
- Benchmarking and improving the environmental performance of our products
- Increasing transparency and collaboration with key partners
- Reducing our carbon emissions from operations
We use the terms sustainable and sustainability to refer to our efforts to minimize our negative impacts and maximize our positive impacts. We are committed to running our business in a way that constantly improves our products and processes, and provides transparency to our stakeholders.
